To Ohio and Beyond

A history of Emigration from Ceredigion to Ohio

The Ship Inn, Pennant – the journey begins!

In 1818 the first of many emigrated from Ceredigion to the hoped-for promised land of America. By 1848 many hundreds more had done so, whole families had upped sticks and helped establish a thriving new community in Ohio at the heart of the New World. Fully two centuries later this book tells the story of some of those individuals and families, their descendants and of the cultural legacy left by this mass emigration on both sides of the Atlantic. Most of the content has been written by the descendants of settlers or those left behind. In drawing together these two communities, old and new, it has been striking how deep the affinity remains despite the passing of generations.

In drawing together these two communities, old and new, it has been striking how deep the affinity remains despite the passing of generations.

In our modern world, now made small by technology, we can bring the old world and the new together more frequently and with relative ease. This has made this book possible as part of a broader celebration of the deep historic connection between the two communities but it also reminds us of the enormity of the challenge and the adventure undertaken by our ancestors all those years ago.

The book has been published through subscription in two versions, one in English and one in Welsh. With all the subscribers listed in full in both editions and many of these descendants of the original migrants this will be a physical bridge between the generations and their two countries.

The book also serves as a memorial to the spirit, bravery and determination of those who emigrated – a reminder of our ability to adapt, innovate and set forth brightly into the unknown. As such it is a hand bound, hardback edition printed and finished here in Ceredigion – a fitting tribute and record. Anything less would not do justice to those within.
